Calling All Volunteers! INLA 2018 Day of Service
Volunteer and Help Iowa Communities
September 11, 2018
(rain date 9/18/18)
IOWA ARBORETUM
1875 Peach Ave, Madrid, IA 50156
The Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association (INLA) will help mark the Iowa Arboretum’s 50th anniversary with our annual Day of Service on September 11, 2018, in Madrid. This annual day of service brings together INLA professionals and horticulture students from area community colleges and universities for a day benefiting Iowa organizations and communities. Students from Iowa State University, Kirkwood Community College, and Des Moines Area Community College will be participating this year. The students and member companies of INLA will install new landscape plants and a splash fountain around the Hughes Education Center, and install paver and flagstone walkways at the Kroeze Teahouse at the Iowa Arboretum.
“INLA members played an important role in starting the Iowa Arboretum back in 1968. It is only fitting that we return to the Iowa Arboretum to recognize this historic achievement,” said John Hughes, INLA president.
INLA encourages Iowa nursery and landscape professionals and students to volunteer and give back to Iowa communities! All volunteers will receive lunch, a t-shirt, and plenty of cold drinks during the day. Volunteers interested in helping out during the 2018 Day of Service can contact Joan O’Brien at [email protected] or by calling 515.262.8323.

2017 Day of Service Location Announced
2017 Day of Service to benefit On With Life Patients
and Their Families in Ankeny
The fifth annual INLA Service Day date has been announced! On September 13, 2017 the Iowa Nursery & Landscape Association will help On With Life, Inc. complete their therapeutic grounds project.
“Currently, On With Life is lacking an outdoor environment for those in rehabilitation and their family members. We have limited outdoor areas for persons served to explore, places that a young parent can play with his or her child, or places where families can relax and have respite from the challenges of their new normal. In addition, the outdoor grounds at On With Life are almost entirely undeveloped and inadequate for delivering therapy, with very few hard surfaces suitable for wheelchairs.”
On With Life plans to transform 1.5 acres of green space into multi-faceted outdoor ADA-accessible therapeutic grounds over the next two years. You can make a donation by visiting them online or contacting their Foundation at 515-289-9611 or by email.
To volunteer during the INLA Day of Service please contact Joan O’Brien 515-262-8323 or [email protected].
Our 2016 Project
We had a great group of volunteers at the Iowa Arboretum in Ames last year! Students from Kirkwood and DMACC participated in the service day, they revamped their entrance sign area, adding pavers, mulch and creating a flagstone pathway and center piece connecting the new one room school house and children’s garden, and Landscaping the school house, complete with proper rain garden for drainage, period appropriate plants, and mulch. Read more about our 2016 project here>>>, view photos, watch the coverage on the Agribusiness report on WHO-TV.
