Iowa Nursery and Landscape Companies Honor 9/11 with day of Service in Madrid

On September 7, 2016 the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association (INLA) is hosting the 5th annual Day of Service in Iowa at the Iowa Arboretum in Madrid, Iowa. This annual opportunity is to remember the events of 9/11/2001 and to ask INLA members to volunteer to give back in the community. The INLA Day of Service Planning Committee began in 2011 and held its first Day of Service, INLA has continued to choose locations all across central Iowa.

Around 29 INLA member volunteers participated in the 2015 Day of Service to revive Linn Hall on the Kirkwood Campus in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Horticulture students from Kirkwood Community College and Iowa State University (ISU) participated along with the members of the INLA board of directors.

The Day of Service locations are selected by the INLA Day of Service Planning Committee and have varied from the ISU campus in Ames, Iowa, to a site on Iowa government ground surrounding the State Capitol, and the Kirkwood Campus. The

The 2016 Day of Service is taking place at the Iowa Arboretum in Madrid, Iowa on September 7, 2016. INLA encourage Iowa nursery and landscape professionals and horticulture students to volunteer to give back to Iowa communities. During the Day of Service, INLA always provide volunteers with lunch and plenty of beverages for their heard work. About the Iowa Arboretum, the Iowa Arboretum is located on 415 acres in the heart of Boone County. The arboretum was organized in 1966 by the Iowa State Horticultural Society on the society’s 100th anniversary. Its mission is to grow, display, identify and study plants for education, research, conservation, esthetics, and for personal enjoyment and recreation. The arboretum contains hundreds of species of trees, shrubs, and flowers arranged in 19 collections spanning 40 acres.

2016 Exhibitor Registration Now Open

The ISU Shade Tree Short Course and INLA Trade Show exhibitor registration is now open! Your participation is critical to the excitement of our conference, association, and statewide horticulture industry.

Iowa State’s annual Shade Tree Short Course is once again teaming up with the Iowa Nursery & Landscape Association’s Trade Show. The partnership brings exhibitors an even bigger, better opportunity to connect with potential clients by highlighting the best of both worlds and incorporating INLA’s long-standing trade show into the traditional ISU Shade Tree Short Course educational sessions.

Exhibitors may tear down their booths between 1:30-5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26. Carts will be available in the ground floor lobby of the Scheman Building to transport your materials to your vehicles. If you have materials which need to be shipped back to your organization, please pack them in an appropriate container or box, place a pre-paid shipping label on the outside, and leave at your exhibit table. Building staff will ship it back for you via your preferred carrier the following business day.

Membership Dinner & Scholarship Auction

The Annual Membership Dinner and Scholarship Auction will take place Wednesday, February 24, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Reiman Gardens. All proceeds from this event go to INLA Horticulture scholarships.  You are invited to join trade show attendees in a relaxing environment for networking and entertainment.

The Iowa State University Shade Tree Short Course and Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association committee and board would like to welcome you to Ames and to the biggest and best horticultural nursery event in the State of Iowa! The last 6 years we have averaged over 700 horticulture, tree, and landscape experts in one location to learn, share, and promote our industry together.

Attendees will vary from INLA members, IA Arborist members, to municipal employees and some general public horticulture enthusiasts. Your participation is critical to the excitement of our conference, association, and statewide horticulture industry.

2015 Day of Service; Huge Success!

2015 IOWA NURSERY & LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION’S DAY OF SERVICE WAS ANOTHER SUCCESS!

Cedar Rapids, IA – The 2015 Iowa Nursery & Landscape Association Day of Service was held on September 11 at Linn Hall on the Kirkwood Campus in Cedar Rapids, IA. Annually INLA holds a Day of Service at a location in Iowa to remember the events of 9/11/2001 and to ask its members and citizens of Iowa to volunteer to give back in the community. Around 29 volunteers participated in the 2015 Day of Service, students from Kirkwood and Iowa State University (ISU) participated along with the INLA board of directors.

Volunteers began working on the Linn Hall site at 9 a.m. Lunch was provided on site by the INLA planning committee and work continued to around 3 p.m. The volunteers were given a chance to tour the campus greenhouse, the horticulture building, along with the winery and vineyard.

The Day of Service locations are selected by the INLA Day of Service Planning Committee and have varied from the ISU campus in Ames, IA to a site on Iowa government ground surrounding the State Capitol. The Kirkwood Campus was the fourth location in Iowa to be selected.

The INLA board of directors and the 2015 planning committee would like to extend a tremendous thank you to all of our volunteers and students that made our 2015 INLA Day of Service such a success! Along with a very special thank you to Mike Martin and the grounds crew at Kirkwood for their willingness to aid with equipment, plant material, resources and general enthusiasm for the project.

INLA Award Winners

KEVIN FEHR ANNOUNCED AS THE IOWA CERTIFIED NURSERY PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR

Des Moines, IA – For his contribution to the INLA by instilling enthusiasm and interest in the young people of our industry, our 2015 ICNP of the Year is Kevin Fehr of Iowa Lakes Community College. Kevin is a long time member and contributor of the INLA. We are pleased that Kevin has dedicated so much time to the INLA over the years. Kevin is a member of numerous professional associations including: Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Assn, Iowa Professional Lawn Care Assn, Iowa Golf Course Superintendents Assn, Golf Superintendents of America, Iowa Sports Turf Managers Assn.

Kevin has contributed much to the future of our industry by sharing their passion and interest with many young people and fueled their interest in our industry. In fact, over the years, this person has brought numerous individuals to the INLA convention and STSC for continuous learning. The classroom learning has been further enhanced when this person has brought numerous young people to get their hands dirty by participating in the INLA Annual Day of Service. Just 2 years ago this person became a newly minted ICNP and demonstrated to their students the importance that continuous education plays in a green industry career. We were also pleased with they accepted a seat on the INLA Board a few years ago.

 

STEVE RITTER INDUCTED INTO THE IOWA NURSERY & LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION’S HALL OF FAME

Des Moines, IA – Steve Ritter of Ritter’s Garden’s Center, West Burlington, Iowa, was inducted into the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association’s (INLA) Hall of Fame during the INLA annual trade show and conference, held February 25-27, 2014.

Steve has been working in the family business since he was 14. His parents Ralph and Pauline Ritter purchased a feed store in Fort Madison IA in 1969. Steve attended ISU to study Horticulture graduating in 1978. In 1981 they added another florist, landscape, and garden center in West Burlington, IA. In 2004 Steve and his wife, Lynn, purchased the business from his parents. Steve and Lynn have 3 children, Chris, Ryan, and Amanda, whom all work in the business. They have 7 grandchildren and one on the way.

Over the years Steve has been very active in the industry as well as his community. He has served on the INLA board and was president in 1999, he also served on the western board and was president in 2007. Steve has been past president of Morning Kiwanis, served on the Board of Supervisors, and the Burlington Golf Club Board. He also thoroughly enjoyed his time teaching and being head of the Horticulture Department at Southeastern Community College.

 

BRENT GUSTASON RECEIVES THE IOWA NURSERY & LANDSCAPE ASSOCIATION’S MERIT AWARD

Des Moines, IA—INLA is proud to honor Brent Gustason of Johnson’s Nursery, Inc., Menomonee Falls, WI with the INLA Award of Merit. Brent received a degree in Botany and Plant Biology in 1993 from UNI. His resume boasts an impressive list of companies with whom he has worked and sold plants for including; Leid’s Nursery, Hawks Nursery, Midwest Groundcovers and currently with Johnson’s Nursery in Menomonee Falls, WI. Brent has been organizing the auctions for the INLA Scholarship dinners.

Brent is a man dedicated to his profession with high ethical standards, an admirable work ethic, ready smile and handshake and a belief in the future of our industry. And it is because of those traits and many others that we are proud to honor Brent Gustason with the INLA Award of Merit. But, maybe most importantly, Brent is a dedicated husband (to Lina) and father (to Quinn).

The INLA Merit Award is given to an individual who has done an outstanding job in one or more of the following: participating actively in the affairs of the organization, actively promoting the Association and its goals, given freely of their time in helping fellow nursery professionals with their problems, and/or done an outstanding job in developing new plant material or other items to further the nursery industry.

ICPI Concrete Paver Installer Course

About the Course

The two-day classroom course is designed to enhance the knowledge of individuals with at least one year’s experience in the construction of interlocking concrete pavements. The registration fee includes a student manual and an exam. Those who attend the course and pass the exam receive a Record of Completion for the course. Attendance at this course is one of the requirements for earning a Concrete Paver Installer Certification.

  • Material and labor estimating
  • Job planning and layout
  • Soil classification and compaction Soil compaction
  • Bedding and joint sand
  • Paver selection and installation
  • Use of labor-saving specialty tools
  • Edge restraints
  • Base material selection and compaction
  • Contract basics

  • Maintenance and Management
  • Specialty Applications
  • Estimating and job costing

Who Should Attend?

The ICPI Concrete Paver Installer Course has been designed for all individuals involved in the residential and commercial installation of interlocking concrete pavements, including:

  • Company owners and principals Job superintendents Forepersons and supervisors Crew leaders
  • Crew members (with minimum one year installation experience)
  • Why Apply for Certification?
  • The ICPI Concrete Paver Installer Course imparts the necessary knowledge and industry guidelines required to build pavements using concrete pavers. Going further by passing the certification exam and meeting the minimum installation experience requirements demonstrates that you meet the criteria established by the industry as a true “ICPI Certified Installer.”
  • Visit www.icpi.org/certification to download an Application for Certification, which can be submitted to ICPI at any time. Certification renewal requires 8 hours of Continuing Education to be earned during each two-year certification term.
